Andrea II SCACCIATI (1725-1771), after Giulio PIPPI known as - Lot 194
Andrea II SCACCIATI (1725-1771), after Giulio PIPPI known as GIULIO ROMANO (c. 1499-1546) "Battle scene with chariot Aquatint on paper Sight size: 27 x 40.5 cm (some slight foxing) Provenance : * Former collection of NICOS DHIKEOS (Cyprus 1896-1987), stamped on the back of the frame (Lugt 3529). * French private collection, then by descent Bibliography * This scene is taken from the decor of the Salle de Troie in the Palazzo del Te in Mantua. Born on April 8, 1896 in Nicosia on the island of Cyprus (according to a letter sent to the Fondation Custodia in 1964, whereas most auction catalogs give his date of birth as 1899), Nicos Dhikeos moved to France in 1916. He became owner and director of the Saint-François gallery, specialized in Old Master paintings, located at 24 rue Auguste-Comte in Lyon. Dhikeos was also Consul of the Republic of Cyprus in Lyon from 1963 until his death in 1987. According to the introduction to the catalog of the sale held in Monaco in 1992, Nicos Dhikeos, "a friend of Monseigneur Makarios III, created the Pinacotheque of the Makarios III Foundation in Cyprus in 1985". From 1930 onwards, with the help of his wife Dimitra, he built up an important collection of drawings and prints from all periods, often acquired at auction but also through purchases from Lyon collections such as those of A. Tardieu. Tardieu (L.183b) and Louis Maudet (L.3582). The collection mainly comprised works from the Italian and French schools, in roughly equal numbers, with smaller numbers from the Northern, Swiss and English schools. Dhikeos had told the Fondation Custodia that he was thinking of preparing a catalog of the collection, and also mentioned his collection of prints from all schools, from the 16th to the 18th century. Shortly before his death, he divested himself of a number of important drawings, including a study of the Virgin by Vittore Carpaccio (inv. 87.GG.8) and a drawing by Parmesan (inv. 87.GB.9), which were acquired by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Joos de Winghe's The Last Supper (inv. 1987.7) entered the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York through Christophe Janet's New York gallery. When this first batch of drawings from the collection was exported in 1986, several sheets were acquired by the Louvre, including a fine set by Benedetto Caliari after Paolo Caliari (Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. RF 41299, RF 41300 and RF 41301), and three drawings by André Lebrun (inv. RF 41306, RF 41307 and RF 41309). The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., also holds a sheet representing Une tête d'enfant by Edme Bouchardon (inv. 1987.37.1), entered the same year. Numerous museums hold drawings from this collection; for example, the British Museum, London, has Cesare Nebbia's Noces de Cana and Willem de Poortere's Homme vu en buste (London, British Museum, Prints & Drawings, inv. 1997.0222.1 and inv. 2005.0430.6), the Musée National du Château de Pau, Achille Deveria's Les Quatre Henri dans la maison de Crillon à Avignon (inv. P. 2006.12.1), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Portrait of Charlotte Duchesne by Philippe de Champaigne (inv. 1994.7) and Andromaque et Astyanax by Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (inv. 1999.348), the Getty Museum a fine study of Centaur and Lapithe by Francesco Primaticcio (inv. 89.GB.66) and a drawing of Wooded Landscape by Herman van Swanevelt (inv. 95.GG.17). Many of the drawings in the Dhikeos collection can be found on the market. They have been circulating since 1987 (Christophe Janet Gallery, New York in 1897; cat. Colnaghi, London 1987, no. 46 as Edme Bouchardon, no. 47 as Dandré-Bardon; sale 1988, January 12, New York, Christie's, no. 126 as Gillis de Neyts; sale 1989, April 18, London, Christie's, no. 22 as F. Allegrini). Since 1992-1993, however, numerous examples of this collection have appeared each year in the catalogs of European auction houses and galleries. In these, the name is sometimes spelt Dhikéos, Dikheos, or even Dikeos. In 1992, Christie's sale of 54 drawings from the Dhikeos collection included 9 lots of Italian drawings, 38 French drawings, including 14 by French artists born after 1748, five drawings from the Northern schools and two from the Spanish school. These drawings came from the collection's French holdings, plus a number of sheets mostly from the so-called "Sagredo-Borghese" albums, but actually by Zaccaria Sagredo (L.2103a). We should also mention the two Paris sales of 1993 and 1994, followed by a large number of drawings auctioned in 1996 and 1997. In French and English public sales, just over 40% of the drawings offered for sale between
