François-Honoré-Georges JACOB-DESMALTER (1770-1841) (after) - Lot 337
François-Honoré-Georges JACOB-DESMALTER (1770-1841) (after) Replica of Napoleon's throne made in 1808 for the Château de Fontainebleau. With a laurelled medallion back, its front legs feature Hercules heads sheathed in lion's hocks. A footrest as in the original model is included. Made by Olivier DE SCHRIJVER (b. 1958), Belgian school, for Ode's Design. Height : 140 cm - Width : 96 cm - Depth : 73 cm Bibliography * Replica of Napoleon's throne, made by Ode's workshops after the famous cabinetmaker Jacob-Desmalter to designs by Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine in 1804 for the Château de Saint-Cloud and now in the Château de Fontainebleau. * The copy of this exceptional armchair, a true masterpiece of cabinetmaking, reproduces one of Napoleon's five thrones. Each of these ceremonial seats illustrated the Emperor's authority in the five places of power: the Tuileries, the sovereign's principal residence (throne now in the Louvre); the Palais de Saint-Cloud, his official secondary residence (throne now in the Château de Fontainebleau); the two legislative assemblies - the throne of the Corps Législatif (now in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs), the throne of the Sénat (still in the Sénat) - and this one, probably from the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. This seat was depicted in 1809 by Robert Lefebvre in his official full-length portrait of Napoleon commissioned for the Hôtel de Ville de Paris (now in the Musée Carnavalet).
